Heaven

I ascend above the highest clouds into heaven;

Where faith is a soaring eagle and ignorance is its descension;

Where life is everlasting and comforts are endless;

Where the state of our souls reflects our physical presence;

Where the content of character is the only essential credential;

Where love is perfectly paired like two turtle doves;

Unbound to the restrictions of finite mortal love;

No time or space, no kings or slaves,

Only eternal peace for all those He forgave.

But then I awake, blood still surging through my veins;

Sleeps beautiful ecstasy no longer in range;

The struggle continues, though my soul remains restless;

To return to this paradise on God’s personal guest list.

Dreams of Utopia

Blue hues erupt above cotton candy clouds,
Green rolling hills havens for those thinking aloud.
Ideas permeate the air like smoke from a chimney,
One puff destructive, while another is an epiphany.
Hearts consumed with dreams of a better tomorrow,
One free of injustice, lives free of sorrow.
Eyes tinkle at images of utopia in fast forward,
Where the character of man supersedes the outward.
A world in which love is blind and hate is mute,
Where understanding and compromise solve every dispute.
Where wars are historical events fading from memory,
Poverty and discrimination not an ever present reality.
Hands clasped under moons turning to faith,
For a day when one’s birth doesn’t determine their place.
Yet in this present the struggle still continues,
Each small act of kindness unravelling the truth.

Pilgrimage

Kneeling in ranks and seeking His grace,
Greeting the ground with one’s precious face.
Tears flowing from eyes as prayers are made,
This is the day that one’s scale may be swayed.
Called to His house, a pillar fulfilled,
Land enveloped by peace, where no blood is spilled.
Hearts bursting with joy, aching bodies are numb,
Hopes pouring from tongues under the blistering sun.
Oh Lord, forgive us for mistakes we’ve made,
Grant us Your protection from the torments of the grave.
And on the promised day when Your reckoning will begin,
Pardon our souls and free us from sin.
